When looking for energy wasters at your business, don't forget about the refrigerator and freezer in the break room, or the clothes washer in the back room. These appliances may be small, but they are used every day, which makes upgrading to energy-efficient models a wise investment.

Even if your refrigerator is only five years old, you may want to think about replacing it. Today's ENERGY STAR® models - equipped with high-efficiency compressors, improved insulation, and more precise temperature and defrost mechanisms - use 40 percent less energy than 2001 models (and 50 percent less energy than models made before 1993). When you consider that it costs about $10 a month to operate the average refrigerator, it's easy to see how the savings add up. When it comes to freezers, standard-sized ENERGY STAR units (including upright and chest models with volumes greater than 7.75 cubic feet) use at least 10 percent less energy than required by current federal standards. |

Thinking about investing in a new clothes washer? When you are shopping around, make sure you look for the ENERGY STAR label. Through superior design and features, ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washers clean clothes using 50 percent less energy than standard washers.
And most full-sized ENERGY STAR washers use 18-25 gallons of water per load, compared to the 40 gallons used by a standard machine. They also extract more water from clothes during the spin cycle, which reduces drying time and heating energy.
