If your water heater is more than 10 years old, it probably is 50 percent less efficient than a newer model. An old, inefficient water heater can operate for years before it fails. One way to reduce your water heating costs is to replace your old water heater with a new, higher efficiency model.
| Equipment | Reward |
|
Electric tank type, 40 gallon tank or greater, energy factor 0.93 or greater |
$50 each |
|
Natural gas tank type, 40 gallon tank or greater, energy factor 0.62 or greater |
$75 each |
| Natural gas condensing, thermal efficiency 90% or greater | $300 each |
|
Natural gas tankless: EF 0.80 or greater |

If you're looking to implement efficiency upgrades that have big potential for maximum impact on your bottom line, consider insulation and building sealing.
Insulation levels are specified by R-Value, which measures the insulation's ability to hold in or hold out heat. The higher the insulation's R-Value, the better its thermal performance.
| Measure | Reward |
|
Ceiling and in-wall insulation |
70 percent of total cost of contract labor, equipment and material up to a maximum of $10,000 for each type of insulation. |
|
Building Sealing |
70 percent of total cost of contract labor, equipment and material up to a maximum of $1,500 |
|
Multi-family insulation and building sealing |
For multi-family dwellings the maximum reward is $750 per dwelling unit insulated and sealed. |
Note:
A geothermal heating and cooling system, sometimes called a ground source heat pump, works on a simple premise: the earth below the “frost line” (usually about five feet down) is at a constant temperature of about 50 degrees year round. Heat can be taken from the ground and transferred through a heat pump to warm the air in your business during the winter. Heat can also be transferred back into the ground during summer to cool your business. Because the loop is self-contained and the heat pump is installed indoors, a geothermal system can have a life expectancy of up to 50 years.
