Williams Bulk Transfer

Williams Bulk Transfer is a state-of-the-art coal terminal located in Williams, Iowa. Built and operated by Alliant Energy Transportation, the facility currently handles 700,000 tons of coal per year, with the capacity of up to 1.3 million tons.

Coal is unloaded from rail car to ground storage via a bottom-dump system at more than 1,200 tons per hour. The coal is then loaded into trucks for just-in-time shipment to regional coal users.

The facility can accommodate 120-car unit trains and can handle other bulk products, such as fertilizer and salt.

The most recognizable feature of the Williams Bulk Transfer facility is the inflatable dome safeguarding the environment. The dome is 200 feet wide, 475 long and 58 feet high, encompassing the entire operation.
