Alliant Energy receives federal stimulus money to further Smart Grid efforts in Wisconsin
$3.2 million grant will help upgrade infrastructure to build a smart energy future
MADISON, WI – October 27, 2009 – Alliant Energy Corporation’s (NYSE: LNT) Wisconsin Power and Light Company subsidiary (WPL) has been awarded an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Smart Grid Investment Grant Program.
The announced $3.2 million Distribution Automation grant involves WPL’s implementation of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) technology throughout its service territory. Specifically, this grant will allow WPL to make its existing infrastructure more efficient and reduce the need for equipment upgrades as the company continues its Smart Grid efforts.
“We are extremely pleased that the Department of Energy has recognized that our AMI investment creates the foundation for Smart Grid,” said Barbara Swan, President - WPL. “This grant will allow us to build upon that foundation and partner with our customers to create a smart energy future that is expected to bring them long-term cost savings and empower them by providing the insight and tools needed to manage their own energy usage while also creating operational efficiencies at WPL.”
“We also want to thank Governor Doyle and the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin for their strong support of our grant applications and our continued efforts to work with our customers on building a smart energy future,” Swan added.
WPL is currently about 80 percent through its AMI deployment project which is expected to total nearly 645,000 electric and gas meters when complete.
