New Generation Update

Over the past ten years, electric demand in our service area has increased by approximately eight percent despite Alliant Energy’s leadership in providing innovative energy efficiency programs. Long-term forecasts for growing demand and the potential of climate change regulation is driving the need for a generation plan that will enhance economic opportunities, environmental stewardship and energy reliability.

Interstate Power and Light Company Generation Plan

IPL is constructing the Whispering Willow Wind Farm’s first phase, a 200 MW wind project in Franklin County, Iowa.  The project is expected to be online before the end of 2009. In addition, IPL has plans to add another 100 MW to the site sometime in 2011.

Wisconsin Power and Light Company Generation Plan

WPL is seeking final regulatory approvals to start building the Bent Tree Wind Farm in Freeborn County, Minnesota.  Major construction of the farm is expected to begin in 2010 and will produce approximately 200 MW of renewable energy for customers in Wisconsin.

WPL began commercial operation of the Cedar Ridge Wind Farm, a 68 MW wind farm in the Towns of Eden and Empire, Wisconsin near Fond du Lac in December 2008.

WPL recently added more natural gas- fired generation to its portfolio. In June 2009, the utility purchased a natural gas generating facility at Neenah, Wisconsin, which has a nameplate capacity of 300 megawatts (MW). WPL expects to purchase the 600 MW natural gas-fired Riverside Generating Station near Beloit, Wisconsin in 2013.
